Modern Silver Dollars

In 1935, the United States Mint issued the last 90% silver dollars to be used in circulation. In 2021, the United States Mint relaunched silver dollars, this time with the intention of providing a silver bullion $1 (USD) coin that could be issued for investors and collectors on an annual basis. The 2021 release of modern silver dollars included new Morgan Silver Dollar coins and Peace Silver Dollar Coins.

Modern Morgan and Peace Dollars

The introduction of the modern silver bullion Morgan Dollar and Peace Dollar occurred in 2021 in honor of an important centennial date for the two coins. In 1921, the US Mint struck the circulation Morgan Silver Dollar for the final time ever, and later in the year, struck the circulation Peace Silver Dollar for the first time ever. With the reintroduction of these two beautiful coins, America’s final two circulation 90% silver dollar designs returned to production.

Modern vs. Historic US Silver Dollars

While the new Morgan Silver Dollar and Peace Silver Dollar have the same legal tender status as the historic circulation pieces, the value of the silver within each coin far exceeds the denomination assigned to the coins by the US Mint. Modern silver dollars have .859 Troy oz of .999 pure silver content, while the historic circulation silver dollars had .7734 Troy oz of 90% silver with a balance of 10% copper for durability.

Modern Silver Dollar Designs and Offerings

The United States Mint issued Morgan and Peace Dollars starting in 2021 with proof and BU versions of the coin issued in two of the three years since (as of 2023). The initial release in 2021 featured six options:

• 5 versions of the Morgan Silver Dollar were issued to honor the historic branch mints that released the coins in the past. The Philadelphia Mint issued the coins without a mint mark, as well as issuing two coins with privy marks honoring the defunct Carson City Mint (CC) and New Orleans Mint (O). Additionally, the Denver Mint (D) and San Francisco Mint (S) issued Morgan Silver Dollars.
• 1 version of the Peace Silver dollar was issued by the Philadelphia Mint, with no mint mark present on the coins.

After a hiatus in 2022, the coins returned in 2023 and offered both BU and proof versions for investors and collectors. The were produced by both the Philadelphia Mint, with no mint mark, and by the San Francisco Mint with an S mint mark.

The designs found on the modern silver dollars are the same as those originally designed for each coin. These include:

• George T. Morgan’s designs for the Morgan Dollar include a left-profile bust of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap on her head with the laurel wreath and coronet crown in her hair. The field includes a ring of 13 stars and a date mark. The reverse side of the coin comes with a depiction of the heraldic eagle, a front-facing bald eagle with wings spread as its talons clutch the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
• Anthony de Francisci’s design for the Peace Silver Dollar reflected America’s desire for lasting peace after the horrors of World War I. Introduced to production on December 28, 1921, the new Peace Silver Dollar features a left-profile bust of Liberty on the obverse with her hair flowing in the wind as she wears a crown of radiant light. On the reverse, you’ll find the American bald eagle perched on a rock ledge with an olive branch in its talons as its wings rest at its side while it gazes toward the sun.
