The San Francisco Mint releasing the 2023 Proof Morgan Dollars is a tribute. They were one of two mints making Morgan Silver Dollars every year, alongside the Philadelphia Mint. The only other mint with a long track record for producing the original Morgan Dollars was the New Orleans Mint.
In addition to the contributions of Philadelphia and San Francisco to the original Morgan Dollar production, New Orleans issued the coins each year except the 1878 and 1921. The Carson City mint issued the original coins from 1878 to 1885 and 1889 to 1893. The Denver Mint struck the coins only once in 1921.
The obverse field of the 2023-S Proof Morgan Dollars, there’s a picture of Lady Liberty facing left. This design was made by George T. Morgan in 1878 and shows Liberty with a cap and crown.
On the reverse side of the 2023 Proof Morgan Silver Dollar, there’s a picture of an eagle. George T. Morgan designed this too. It’s a forward-facing eagle with spread wings, holding arrows and an olive branch.
The 2023-S Proof Morgan Silver Dollars here have frosted designs strikes with mirrored fields. These coins got a perfect grade, PR70, from PCGS, which means each one has full, original mint luster with no detractions. First Day of Issue specimens are coins received for grading within 24 hours of release from the mint.
