    1981 US Mint Proof Set

The 1981 US Mint Proof Set includes the final year of the Susan B. Anthony Dollar. The Anthony Dollar was unpopular in circulation, thus, in 1981, the Mint produced it only for issue in Proof Sets and Mint Sets. The Mint sold 4,063,083 of the 1981 Proof Sets, which is second only to the 1976 Bicentennial Proof Set in sales. This was the last year of 6 coins in Proof Sets until 1999. 1982 US Mint Proof Set

The 1982 US Mint Proof Set reverted back to a set of 5 coins with the discontinuation of the Anthony Dollar. In its location in the packaging was placed a Proof Treasure Token. Even though the face value of the Proof Set dropped from $1.91 to $0.91, the original issue price remained at $11.00. In spite of this, the Mint still sold 3,857,479 of the 1982 Proof Sets, which was a minimal decrease from 1981 Proof Set sales. All coins in the Set were i... Read More

The 1987 US Mint Proof Set experienced the third highest sales of any Proof Set during the 1980’s, with sales of 3,792,233 sets. The 1987 Proof Set continued as a 5 coin set with a face value of $0.91. With all of the minting technology improvements being made, deep cameo... Read More

For the first time since 1904, a US Mint Proof Set includes a One Dollar coin. The Mint added the copper-nickel clad version of the Eisenhower Dollar to the 1973 Proof Set, making it a 6 coin set. With the additional coin in the set, the Treasury felt it was justified in increasing the price of the set. Sales did fall off a bit from 1972 levels, but still managed to sell 2,760,339 sets in 1973. The Proof finish on these coins enhances their beaut... Read More

    1969 US Mint Proof Set

The 1969 US Mint Proof Set was a notable release from the United States Mint. Proof Sets from the US Mint

In addition to the multitude of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium coins issued by the United States Mint, it produces other collectible sets for coin enthusiasts. These sets often feature the circulation coin designs of the United States struck with greater attention to detail and, in some cases, offered with silver content. However, there are sets offered each year that simply celebrate the beautiful designs of American currency.

    What is a Proof Set?

A proof set issued by the United States Mint is simply a collection of coins that features designs struck with proof visuals. In this case, the coins have higher relief on the design strike, a frosted finish to the design element, and a mirror-like background field that helps create visual contrast between a design and the field of the coin.

What Types of Proof Sets are Available?

The United States Mint issues a wide range of commemorative and proof coin sets. One of the most common is simply known as the US Mint Proof Set. This set features the circulating denominations annually produced by the US Mint, but with beautiful proof visuals. The typical US Mint Proof Set features the following circulating coins:

    • Lincoln Penny
    • Jefferson Nickel
    • Roosevelt Dime
    • Washington Quarter
    • Kennedy Half Dollar
    • Sacagawea Dollar

The coins in this set have no precious metal content. Instead, the coins are struck on the traditional blanks using the metallic alloy preferred for circulation use. This includes the following compositions for each coin:

    • Penny – 2.5% copper and the balance Zinc
    • Nickel – 25% nickel and the balance copper
    • Dime/Quarter/Half Dollar – 8.33% nickel and the balance copper
    • Dollar – 6% Zinc, 3.5% Manganese, 2% Nickel, and the balance copper
