The US Mint sold 3,251,152 of the 1977 Proof Sets in spite of the fact that they raised the price of the set from $7.00 to $9.00. Even with the price increase, the sales of the 1977 Proof Set were still above the pre-Bicentennial annual sales. It is still a 6 coin set, with every coin in the set – except the Lincoln Cent – being a Proof-only issue. The mirror-like Proof finish on the coins enhances their beauty and shine. This set was made by the US Mint in San Francisco. Currently, JM Bullion has this 1977 US Mint Proof Set available for purchase online.

The 1977 Proof Set comes in the standard Proof Set packaging that has been used since 1973. Each coin is placed in an individually sealed ring and positioned on a red felt-covered paper insert. The insert is sealed in a two-piece clear plastic case. The clear plastic case is then inserted into a black plastic frame, that opens and closes and can be used as a stand to display the coins. The beauty and shine of the coins really pop against the red background.
The Proof Set consists of one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Eisenhower Dollar. The reverse designs of the quarter, half dollar, and dollar coins returned to their traditional designs, after last year’s bicentennial designs.
The obverse of the Washington Quarter features a left-facing profile of George Washington. This design was created by John Flanagan, who used a 1786 bust of Washington, sculpted by Jean-Antoine Houdon, as his inspiration.
The reverse of the Washington Quarter features an eagle, with its wings outspread, resting on top of a bundle of arrows, framed below by two olive branches. This design was also created by John Flanagan.
