The release of the 1968 US Mint Proof Set was a notable issue in the history of US Mint Proof Sets. From 1936 to 1964, the US Mint issued Proof Sets annually, but was forced into a hiatus for three years prior to the 1968 return of Proof Sets. Today, 1968 US Mint Proof Sets are available online at JM Bullion.
Coin Set Highlights:
The suspension of US Mint Proof Sets between 1965 and 1967 was a result of the skyrocketing price of silver. In 1964, the US Mint issued 90% silver coins in circulation for the final time before shifting to its new cupro-nickel alloy. The rising price of silver made the intrinsic silver value of America’s dime, quarter, half dollar, and dollar greater than the assigned face value. From 1965 to 1967, Proof Sets were canceled as the US Mint focused on backfilling the supply of coin denominations in circulation.
All 1968 US Mint Proof Sets come with a hard plastic holder that includes five coins. The holder is housed in an outer shipper, but please note, that some of these sets may be missing the outer shipper. All coins remain in good condition overall, though wear and tear on the plastic holder is possible.
Included in this set are the 1968-dated Lincoln Penny, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar. The standout in this issue is the Kennedy Half Dollar as it is the only coin that has silver content. From 1965-1970, the US Mint issued Kennedy Half Dollars with 40% silver content.
