The US Mint sold 3,127,781 of the 1978 Proof Sets. This was the last year that the set contained the Eisenhower Dollar, which was the last full-sized Dollar produced by the US Mint. It is still a 6 coin set, and nearly all of the coins will have deep cameo finishes. Some of the 1978 Proof coins received perfect grades of PR70 or PF70 from PCGS or NGC. This set was made by the US Mint in San Francisco. Right now, these 1978 US Mint Proof Sets are available for purchase online from JM Bullion.

Each Proof Set contains one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Eisenhower Dollar. This was the last year of the Eisenhower Dollar.
The obverse of the Lincoln Cent features a right-facing profile of Abraham Lincoln. In January 1909, the US Mint retained sculptor Victor David Brenner to design a cent depicting the late President. It became the first widely circulated design of a US President on a coin, and is still the obverse of the Lincoln Cent today.
The reverse of the Lincoln Cent features the Lincoln Memorial. This design was the result of an internal competition among the Mint’s engravers that was won by Frank Gasparro. While Gasparro never went in-person to see the Lincoln Memorial, then-Secretary of the Treasury Robert Anderson felt it was an impressive image of the Memorial.
The 1978 Proof Set comes in the same Proof Set packaging that has been used since 1973. This means each coin is placed in an individually sealed ring and positioned on a red felt-covered paper insert. The insert is sealed in a two-piece clear plastic case. The clear plastic case is then inserted into a black plastic frame that can be opened and used as a stand to display the coins. The beauty of the coins really stands out against the red background.
