The first sets of these types were issued in 1936, with the original run for proof sets coming to an end in 1964, only to be resurrected in 1968. Coin Set Highlights:
Each 1990 US Mint Proof Set available here comes with a hard plastic holder containing five coins in all. The holder is available with an outer shipper for most sets. Please note that all coins in this set remain in good condition within the hard plastic holder, but it is possible that the holder may show signs of wear and tear. It is also possible that some sets may be lacking the outer shipper. These coins have mirror-like fields with frosted designs.
The traditional US Mint Proof Set features the Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel, and the Lincoln Penny. Each coin has its own obverse bust of the aforementioned US Presidents, with unique reverse designs that vary by denomination.
The oldest design on any of the coins in this set is the obverse bust of President Abraham Lincoln on the obverse of the Penny, having been introduced in 1909. However, the oldest combined design is found on the Washington Quarter. President George Washington’s bust on the obverse was introduced in 1932, along with the heraldic eagle on the reverse that debuted the same year. By contrast, the reverse design on the Lincoln Penny in this set was more recently introduced in 1959.
