The coins themselves have gone through numerous modifications to both the obverse and reverse designs, as well as in some cases, whose likeness appears on the coin. In addition, due to fluctuating price and availability of the precious metals used in the minting of the coins, their compositions has changed as well. The dime, quarter, and half dollar in the 1989 Proof Set are all copper-nickel clad, 8.33% nickel and 91.67% copper. The cent is copper-plated zinc, 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. And the nickel is 25% nickel and 75% copper.
The packaging of the 1989 Proof Sets remained as it has been since 1983. The coins are placed in individual slots in a purple textured cardboard holder. This purple holder is then sealed in a plastic holder, which is then placed into a purple outer box, with a flap at the top to open and close the box.
