The 1969 US Mint Proof Set was a notable release from the United States Mint. Proof Sets had recently returned to production in 1968, but returned with lower silver content following the end of 90% silver content in the dime, quarter, and half dollar in 1965. However, these sets maintained some silver content from 1965 to 1970 courtesy of the Kennedy Half Dollar. Now, 1969 US Mint Proof Sets are available for purchase online from JM Bullion.
Coin Set Highlights:
In 1964, the United States Mint issued dimes, quarters, and half dollars with 90% silver content for the last time. Silver prices were surging in the 1960s and the US Mint found itself in a position where the intrinsic silver value of each coin was greater than the assigned face value.
While cupro-nickel alloys were added in 1965 to the dime and quarter, the US Mint shifted to 40% silver in its Kennedy Half Dollar. Proof Sets wouldn’t return to production until 1968 after a three-year break to ensure a steady supply of circulation coins. The 1969 Proof Set was the penultimate proof set with silver content.
Included in the 1969 US Mint Proof Set are the Lincoln Penny, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and the Kennedy Half Dollar. As noted above, the only silver content in this set comes from the 40% silver Kennedy Half Dollar.
These 1969 US Mint Proof Sets are available with hard plastic holders and an outer shipper. The shipper may or may not be available with all sets. The coins remain in good condition, even if the hard plastic holder shows signs of wear and tear.
