Travel the Globe with World Silver Coins from JM Bullion

Regular investors in silver turn to reliable sources when making annual purchases of silver to protect their wealth. Coins such as the American Silver Eagle, British Silver Maple Leaf, Canadian Silver Maple Leaf, Chinese Silver Panda, and Perth Mint silver bullion coins represent stable, regularly-issued coins. Outside of these major programs though, there are a variety of different world silver coins available from nations around the globe. Explore some of the growing options in silver coins from locations across the world right now.

    Caribbean Silver Coins

The Caribbean was once the sight of plundering pirates hiding treasure chests filled with gold, silver, and jewels on islands both small and large. Today, modern silver and gold enthusiasts can find a variety of silver coins emerging from this region of the world. Many of the coins are produced by private mints in the United States, such as the Scottsdale Mint. Examples of Caribbean silver coins include:

    • Antiqua & Barbuda Rum Runner Coins: This coin debuted in 2018 as the first in a series of 8 coin designs set for release in honor of various nations in the Caribbean. The Antiqua & Barbuda coin features a galleon offshore as barrels of rum sit on the shore with an open bottle nearby. Available as a BU silver coin, the Rum Runner is also available in a colorized proof with real-life colors added to the ship. More on this collection below.
    • The Barbados Trident Coins have been issued in 2017, 2018, and 2019 with the same designs on the obverse and reverse. The coat of arms on the obverse of the coins features a shield with Pride of Barbados and bearded fig tree, the former of which is the national flower and occupies the two upper corners of the shield. The seal is supported on the left by a dolphin fish and on the right by a pelican, with a hand emerging from the helmet above the shield that holds onto sugarcane. The reverse of the coins features the broken Trident head and offers varying backgrounds. The 2017 and 2019 coins have wave lines in the background, while the 2018 coin has a stippled, or hammered, background. Mintage in this series is limited to 30,000 coins per year.
    • Cayman Islands Marlin: The Cayman Islands Marlin Series launched in 2017 with plans for an annual release. The Cayman Islands is a well-known haven for private, secure banking and offshore tax havens. The Cayman Islands Marlin coins feature an image of a marlin swimming through the Caribbean’s beautiful waters. The obverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II as the islands are a British Overseas Territory.

Perhaps the most exciting silver coins from the Caribbean are those in the new EC8 collection. Released by the Scottsdale Mint in 2018, the collection will represent a total of eight different nations with bullion and proof coins. The design for each nation’s coin will be different and the series is backed by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. Other nations set to feature in this collection include Anguilla, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Each of these nations uses the common currency issued to participating members of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank.

    Isle of Man Silver Coins

Although coins from the Isle of Man have largely flown under the radar in North America, they’ve actually been in production for European collectors and investors since the 1980s. The Pobjoy Mint in England produces the vast majority, if not all, of the major silver coins available today for the Isle of Man. Below are examples of exciting, recent silver coins from this small island set in the Irish Sea between Ireland and Great Britain:

    • Reverse Proof Isle of Man Silver Coins: The standard Isle of Man Silver Coin is one with a design of the Archangel St. Michael. The coins were first issued in 1984 and have been redesigned at numerous times. The 2016 issue of the coins marked a third design and final planned change to the vision of St. Michael. The coins were available as a reverse-proof coin in 2016 (frosted backgrounds, mirrored designs) and a proof coin in 2018 (frosted designs, mirrored backgrounds).
    • Isle of Man Silver Angel: One of the latest releases from the Pobjoy Mint is the Silver Angel Coin, which debuted with the Silver Noble mentioned below. The Silver Angel features the popular design of St. Michael slaying a dragon and is based upon the Medieval Gold Angel coin first issued in England by King Edward IV in 1465. The coin is available as a proof and reverse proof coin in a two-coin set as well.
    • Isle of Man Silver Noble: Issued alongside the Silver Angel, the 2018 Isle of Man Silver Noble is based upon the English Gold Noble coins available from 1344 until King Edward IV replaced them with the Gold Angel coins in 1465. The Gold Noble was the first widely available gold coin in British history.

    African Silver Coins

There are coin programs from the African continent that are incredibly popular, such as the Somalian Silver Elephant and the Rwandan Silver Wildlife Coins. However, that doesn’t mean that all of Africa’s coins are well known by investors. Among the newer options is a coin from the Republic of Chad. The 2017 Republic of Chad Deathstalker Scorpion Coin includes:

    • Obverse design that reflects the image of a Deathstalker Scorpion, a deadly species found in Chad. The reverse design includes the official seal of the Republic of Chad.
    • The coins had a limited mintage of 50,000 coins and a face value of 500 Francs (CFA), and marked the first issue in 2017.

    Netherlands Silver Coins

Similar to the coins of the Isle of Man, there was a unique 2018 release for the Netherlands that reflected an ancient coinage theme. 2018 was the second release of the Lion Dollar, which is based upon the 1617 release of the lion daaldar. The Province of Holland first issued this coin in 1575 and it went into wider circulation in 1617 when the Utrecht Mint in the Netherlands began issuing the coins. The designs include:

    • Obverse features an armored Dutch soldier with the crest of the Netherlands below. The reverse includes the rampant lion of the Netherlands with the Zeeland Waves design element at the bottom.

    Unique World Silver Coins

At times, there are various coins issued that are not part of a larger series or have such low mintage figures that few reach the North American market for silver buyers. Examples of unique world silver coins include the following:

    • 2018 Niue Czech Lion: The Czech Mint issues this unique coin for Niue with the coat of arms for the Czech Republic on the reverse with a resting, two-tailed lion in front of it. The modern coat of arms for the Czech Republic includes a quartered shield with flaming eagles in two quadrants and rampant lions in the other two quadrants. Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy is found on the obverse of the unique coin.
    • 2018 Saint Helena Spade Guinea: First issued in 2018, the Saint Helena Spade Guinea revives the popular gold guinea design issued by England starting in 1663. For nearly 200 years, the gold guinea was the currency of choice in British colonies and trade outposts around the world. The reverse includes the Spade Guinea shield, a depiction of the coat of arms adopted by the English King George I. The obverse includes the third-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II from Raphael Maklouf.
