The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet that was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1892. The ballet was an adaptation of the 1816 short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, by E.T.A. Hoffman. In the ballet, the Mouse King descends from the grandfather clock at the stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve. He’s seen as the main antagonist in the original story as well as the ballet.
