Under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, the American Gold Eagle became an official gold bullion coin of the US. Issued in 4 different weights, the Gold Eagles are guaranteed by the US government to contain the stated amount of actual gold weight in troy ounces, and this gold must be mined within the US. The mintage numbers of the 1986 Gold Eagles are the largest total until 1998, in spite of sales of these coins not starting until October 1986. ... Read More

With the introduction of the Uncirculated American Gold Eagle in 1986, the United States Mint released four coin weights in total. These included a 1 oz gold coin and three fractional-ounce options. The largest of these fractional-ounce coins is the 1/2 oz Uncirculated Gold Eagle. Available each year since 1986, this particular weight has seen some of the steadiest demand in the series.
The 1/2 oz Uncirculated American Gold Eagle has an impressive track record of steady mintage figures. For example, while the 1 oz Gold Eagle has a record high of 1.505 million coins and a record low of 108,000 coins, the 1/2 oz gold coin has more or less stuck to a range between 24,000 and 131,000 coins.
In fact, if you remove the five highest mintages recorded for the 1/2 oz Uncirculated Gold Eagle, the range of high-low mintages is 24,000 to just 98,000 coins.
As alluded to above, while the 1/2 oz Gold Eagle certainly has some record highs of its own, its record-high mintages are well below those of the other coins in the series. In fact, its highest mintage would be the second-highest for the 1/4 oz gold coin and would not crack the top 15 mintage highs for either the 1 oz or 1/10 oz. Those record highs for the 1/2 oz Gold Eagle include:
The fractional-ounce coins in this series, particularly the 1/2 oz and 1/4 oz coins, are less impacted by economic swings than the 1 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins. Between 1986 and 2021, there were 36 release dates for the Gold Eagle. Of those 36 releases, 13 failed to surpass 50,000 coins, only five surpassed 100,000 coins, only two surpassed 250,000 coins, and just one date mark surpassed 500,000 coins. With all that said, the lowest mintages for the 1/2 oz Uncirculated Gold Eagle include:
