When the United States Mint released the American Gold Eagle for the first time, it marked the return of a coin design not seen on US coinage since 1933. Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the Lady Liberty image in 1907 at the behest of President Theodore Roosevelt, who had initiated a bold plan to redesign all American coinage with a modern, distinctly American appeal.
Saint-Gaudens’ design featured Liberty walking forward from the nation’s capital of Washington DC with her torch held high in her right hand and the olive branch of peace in her left. Her depiction was originally surrounded by 46 stars, but changed in 1912 to feature 48 stars after the admission of New Mexico and Arizona into the Union.
When Liberty appeared on the obverse of the 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle, her appearance was modernized and two more stars were added to reflect the admission of Alaska and Hawaii after World War II.
The obverse of all 2017 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle coins features that iconic design from Saint-Gaudens. Prior to its use on the American Gold Eagle, it was on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin from 1907 to 1933.
On the reverse is the image of a family of nesting bald eagles, which was created by Miley Busiek in 1986 for the exclusive use of the American Gold Eagle series. Busiek is an accomplished artist and sculptor who had completed numerous works for public and private interests prior to creating this image.
Each 2017 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coin available today comes with a protective plastic flip for delivery. The 2017 mintage for the 1/2 oz Gold Eagle marked a significant drop from the 2016 1/2 oz Gold Eagle, with demand falling from 74,000 coins in 2016 to just 37,000 coins in 2017.

“This is a gorgeous and substantial coin. It was my first gold purchase and I was concerned that anything less than a full oz might not be impressive, but all I have to say is “Wow”! Also, I’m consistently impressed with JM’s service, esp. now that they’ve added the e-check option.”
