Perth Mint Silver Koala Bullion Coins

The Perth Mint introduced its second-ever annual silver bullion coin in 2007 with the debut of the Australian Silver Koala. Following the lead of the Australian Silver Kookaburra, available since 1990, the Silver Koala features new reverse images of the native marsupial and keeps the tradition of Perth Mint coinage focused on native wildlife species going strong with a second major collection.

Details of the Australian Koala Series

The Perth Mint launched the Australian Silver Koala in 2007 with only a 1 oz silver coin available. In 2008, the series expanded to feature 1/2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 Kilo silver coins alongside the 1 oz silver option. The mint continued to issue these four weights together each year from to 2007 to 2015. Throughout this period, the series offered a mint-to-order mintage program that ensured coining continued each year until the next year’s design was ready for release.

In 2016, the Perth Mint cut the program down to its current size by suspending the 1/2 oz and 10 oz silver coins. Since that time, the coins have been released in only 1 oz silver with a mintage cap of 300,000 coins and a 1 Kilo silver coin with the mint-to-order mintage. While the reverse field famously offers a new depiction of the koala each year, those are not the only changes that have come to the series.

From 2007 to 2017, the Perth Mint used .999 pure silver. In 2018, the mint enhanced the silver purity to .9999 pure content. For most of the Silver Koala’s history, Queen Elizabeth II has dominated the design of the obverse field:

    • 2007-2019: Ian Rank-Broadley’s 1998 depiction of the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara graced the coins.
    • 2020-2023: Jody Clark’s final effigy of Elizabeth II comes to the Silver Koala and depicts the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem.
    • 2024-present: Dan Thorne’s depiction of His Majesty King Charles III in left-profile relief comes to the Silver Koala.

    Variations of Australian Silver Koalas

While the primary release each year in the Australian Silver Koala Series is a Brilliant Uncirculated coin, Perth Mint also offers its beloved Silver Koala coins with collectible options each year as well. Examples of common numismatic versions of the Silver Koala include:

    • Proof coins – a traditional proof coin comes with frosted designs and lettering over a mirrored background field
    • High-relief coins – most commonly combined with proof visuals, high-relief coins are struck with greater pressure in the coining press. The die is used to strike the blank several times, creating a deeper visual field and enhancing the 3D elements of the design
    • Incuse high relief – first issued in 2020, this particular approach created a high-relief design element that was deeply sunk into the field of the coin
