Rare Silver Dollars at JM Bullion

Over the course of American history, three major silver dollar designs were issued by the United States Mint. The Seated Liberty Dollar was available from the 1830s until 1873, with the Morgan Dollar issued from 1878-1904 and in 1921, and the Peace Silver Dollar released from 1921-1928 and in 1934-1935. While it is still possible to find Morgan and Peace Dollars, their numbers are dwindling, particular for coins in certified conditions.

    Rare Morgan Silver Dollars

Among the rarer Morgan Silver Dollars still available are those from the famous GSA Hoard. These coins were discovered in Treasury Department vaults in the 1960s and were later auctioned off to the public. Though the coins were largely uncirculated, even the best specimens only had a certification as high as Mint State 65.

These coins had found their way into Treasury vaults almost immediately after production to back the release of Silver Certificates in circulation. The coins remained in vault bags, saving them from the wear and tear of circulation and accidentally ensuring that nearly a century later there would be some rare dates that were assumed to be lost to the public.

The most common GSA Morgan Silver Dollars were released by the Carson City Mint. The discovery of these coins made some known date marks less coveted as fresh numbers of the coins were available, but also unveiled some coins that represented low mintages even among the remaining specimens.

    Other Rare Silver Dollars

In 2021, the United States Mint revived both the Morgan Dollar and Peace Dollar as modern bullion coins. When it comes to rarity here, there are two factors at play: mintage and certification. The US Mint has limited the mintage levels for all modern Morgan and Peace Dollars, meaning that Mint State 70 and Mint State 69 specimens represent a very small fraction of the original mintages.
