The 1883 release of Morgan Silver Dollars included strikes by the Philadelphia, San Francisco, Carson City, and New Orleans Mints. As was the case with most date marks in this series, the 1883-CC Morgan Dollar was the lowest minted of the four at just over 1.2 million coins issued. The 1883-CC has a relatively high survival rate in the 21st century thanks to the GSA Hoards discovered in the 1960s. Right now, 1883-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coins in certified condition are available to purchase online at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1883-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coin available here is in Mint State 65 condition according to the PCGS. Coins in this condition exhibit an above-average mint luster for the date mark, may have either a few smaller scattered contact marks or two heavier ones, and may also have one or two patches of hairlines. Overall, the coins remain visually attractive after more than 130 years.
1883-CC Morgan Silver Dollars had a mintage that was dwarfed by the production of the coins at the other three mints. The Philadelphia Mint issued the most coins with a total of 12.29 million. The New Orleans Mint and San Francisco Mint contributed 8.725 and 6.25 million coins, respectively, to the 1883 mintage of Morgan Silver Dollars. Though the Carson City Mint’s 1883 mintage figures were much smaller than the other mints, this is actually the second-highest mintage in the series during its 1878-1885 production run, and fifth-highest overall when the 1889-1893 date marks are included.
Liberty features on the obverse of 1883-CC Morgan Dollars. This design comes from George T. Morgan and features Liberty in left-profile relief. She wears a Phrygian cap on the back of her head with both a laurel wreath and coronet crown in her hair. There are also 13 stars on this field of the coin.
Morgan’s version of the heraldic eagle of the United States is found on the reverse of 1883-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coins. The image of the heraldic eagle features a front-facing bald eagle with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons.
