The Morgan silver dollar was a major part of American coinage for nearly eight decades, and went on to become a rare and prized item on collectors’ markets, in many ways the definitive silver bullion collectible in numismatics. Over the years, millions of these coins wound up being sealed in U.S. Treasury vaults and forgotten. The discovery of a vast hoard of nearly 3 million Morgan dollars in the 1960s, and their auctioning to the public by the General Services Administration in 1970s and the early 1980s, made these coins far more abundant than they had ever been. 1904 is a key date for Morgan silver dollars with the “O” mint mark: this was the final year of annual production for the series, and these were the last Morgan coins to be produced at the New Orleans Mint. The most abundant surviving specimens come from the famous GSA hoard, but it’s rarer to come across some of the very first coins to be packaged for auction, which came in soft plastic packaging which was used relatively briefly.
