The Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 to 1890 under the Bland-Allison Act, a Congressional act that required the Treasury to buy $2 to $4 million worth of silver at market value to use in silver dollar coining each month. Starting in 1890, the Sherman Silver Purchase Act required the Treasury to begin buying 4.5 million Troy oz of silver each month to strike silver dollars. That act was repealed in 1893 and the US Mint continued issuing silver dollars using the supplies purchased from 1890 to 1893 until depleted. That stockpile was depleted in 1904 and the Morgan Silver Dollar was suspended at that point.
All of these Morgan Silver Dollar 5-Coin Sets come to you with individual plastic slabs for each coin and a Mint State 63 certification. Coins in MS63 condition have impaired mint luster with several small contact marks, a handful of heavy marks scattered throughout the field, and small hairlines visible without magnification.
Please note that JM Bullion offers you this five-coin set with dates available from 1878 to 1904. The coins you receive will not have any matching date marks, resulting in five individual date marks on the coins in your set.
On the obverse of the coins in the Morgan Silver Dollar 5-Coin Set is a portrait of Liberty. Designed by George T. Morgan, this effigy of Liberty offers a left-profile visual with the coronet crown, laurel wreath crown, and a Phrygian cap. There are 13 stars in the design field as well, one for each of the original colonies that formed America.
The reverse side of Morgan Dollar Coins comes with an image of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Also designed by George T. Morgan, this visual depicts a front-facing bald eagle clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
