Sunshine Mint

Sunshine Mint is a North American-based company that has been in business for more than 3 decades. The mint specializes in producing gold and silver bullion in both round and bar form. Seeing as the company is located in one of the most silver-rich regions of North America, it comes as no surprise that their offering of products is more heavily concentrated on silver than it is gold. Despite the fact that Sunshine is a North American mint, their products have gained renown from all over the world.

Designs and Security Features

Perhaps the most recognizable aspect of Sunshine Mint products is their eagle design which is found on most of their silver rounds, silver bars, and gold bars. The image of a soaring eagle has become a hallmark of Sunshine products, making them easily identifiable to seasoned investors.

The ½ oz and 1 oz silver rounds, for example, feature the eagle design on the obverse side while the purity and weight indications are located on the reverse. Also located on the reverse side of the rounds is a small security feature that can validate the coin’s authenticity simply by making use of a Sunshine Mint decoder lens. This same security feature can be found on the reverse side of most silver and gold bars produced by Sunshine, including those that are protected by a plastic case and assay card.

While special edition Sunshine products, such as the 10 oz SS Gairsoppa Shipwreck silver bar, do not boast the decoder lens-activated security feature, they do contain a unique and verifiable serial number. Sunshine makes it very clear that the security and authenticity of their bullion is a top priority.

History

Sunshine Mint was founded in 1979 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and is a full service mint that has gained worldwide respect for the purity of their products, as well as their quality. Their mint is still headquartered in Idaho, but they have recently opened new locations in Las Vegas, Nevada (2013) and Shanghai, China (2011).

Present

Sunshine is not known to constantly introduce new products or designs, but they are not totally stagnant and, as such, pepper in new products every so often. For instance, their silver rounds were, for a long time, primarily available in only the 1 oz size. More recently, however, Sunshine introduced a ½ oz silver round to their product offering.

Their SS Gairsoppa silver bars and rounds are another recent addition to Sunshine’s product offering. These .999 pure silver bars and rounds are made from silver that was recovered from the ocean floor near the site of the shipwreck. The SS Gairsoppa was a British transport vessel that was carrying more than 100 tons of precious silver from India to London in 1941. When the ship began to run low on fuel, its course needed to be altered to the most direct route to port. Unfortunately, during this course change, the vessel was spotted by Nazi planes and subsequently sunk by a German U-Boat. The lost silver was found in 2010, after which Sunshine mint used some of the recovered silver in order to mint commemorative bars and rounds.

Packaging

Sunshine is well-known for its quality control and the way in which they package their products. When ordering Sunshine Silver Bars, most will be encased in some sort of plastic packaging to protect them from damage. Items like their silver rounds come in tubes of 20 which are sealed directly from Sunshine and are convenient to store.
