Tame the Wild Brumby in the New 2021 High Relief Issue

Perth Mint is famous for its use of new designs of native animal species with each new date mark in a collection. The Australian Kookaburra is the standard-bearer at Perth Mint, offering new reverse designs each year dating all the way back to 1990 when the silver series launched. Perth also uses this approach for Perth Mint high relief proofs. One of the newest in this realm is the Australian Brumby, a species of feral horses that have been on the continent for more than two centuries now. Take a look at the all-new 2021 release of the Australian Brumby!

    All-New Reverse

On the reverse of 2021 2 oz Proof Australian Silver Brumby Coins is a simple, yet elegant and powerful design of the brumby. This feral breed of horse is captured in a design that showcases the freedom of the beasts. Set against a wide-open background field, the brumby roars up on its hind legs and kicks up its front legs as it stands on a rocky outcrop. The high-relief strike of this coin design brings an enhanced sense of visual depth in the background field and greater relief to the figure of the brumby, helping the animal stand out from the field around it.

    Traditional Obverse

The obverse side of the 2021 Proof Australian Silver Brumby Coins comes with the now-traditional effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Adopted on Perth Mint coins in 2018, this right-profile portrait of Her Majesty was initially designed for the Royal Mint in 2015 by Jody Clark. The design is the sixth-generation image of the Queen to grace Australian coins. In this design, she wears the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. This crown is a part of the official Crown Jewels of England and has a stunning 1,333 diamonds in its setting.

    2021 Brumby Release Details

The coins are housed in classic, black presentation cases from Perth Mint that boast a clear lid so you can see the reverse design element without removing the coin from the case. The coins have 2 Troy oz of .9999 pure silver and come with a limited mintage of just 1,000 coins in total. Each one of the coins arrives with a Certificate of Authenticity from Perth.

    What is the Brumby?

The term brumby is a broad one that refers to all wild, feral horses roaming the Australian continent. The term is less of one denoting a single species and more of a generalized term for all of the wild horses on the continent. Many of the horses alive today descended from once-domesticated horses that either escaped from ranches in Australia during the early 19th century or those that were purposely released into the wild once horses were no longer needed. Over the past two centuries, the wild breeds have continued to breed and it is estimated that the annual breeding rate increases the population by 20% to 25% each year. However, an estimated 20% of the horses die annually from drought, parasites, and as a result of the ingestion of poisonous plants.
