Morgan and Peace Dollar Bullion Coins Return in 2023

In 2021, the United States Mint revived its last two silver dollar coin designs in honor of a unique centennial. 2021 marked the 100th anniversary of the final issue of Morgan Silver Dollars in 1921, as well as the 100th anniversary of the first Peace Silver Dollar that same year. While many numismatists hoped the modern silver dollars would remain a staple of the US Mint commemorative catalog, no Morgan Dollars or Peace Dollars were issued in 2022. However, the series is back again in 2023 and has shown its popularity among buyers in the first few weeks.

    A Strong Release

If there were any questions about the viability of annual Morgan Silver Dollar and Peace Silver Dollars, the July 13th release of the 2023 versions of the coins instantly settled the debut. When the US Mint reported its week-end sales on July 16th, the 2023 Morgan Dollar and 2023 Peace Dollar had sold a combined 527,941 coins in just four days of availability following the July 13th release.

In fact, the 2023 versions of the coins ranked as the best-selling coins at the US Mint for the week ending July 16th. The 2023 Morgan Dollar slightly edged its Peace Dollar counterpart with sales of 255,904 individual coins compared to 255,877 individual coins for the Peace Dollar. In addition to these sales of individual coins, the US Mint reported sales of 210 40-coin bulk units of 2023 Morgan Dollars, adding an additional 8,400 coins to the initial sales of 2023 Morgan Dollars, bringing its total sales to date up to 264,304.

The 2023 Peace Silver Dollar is also available with 40-coin bulk units available, and the US Mint reported sales of 194 of these 40-coin bulk units for the Peace Dollar. This adds 7,780 coins to its sales and brings the combined sales of 2023 Peace Dollars during this initial period to 263,637 coins.

    Trimmed Down Series

While the 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar and Peace Silver Dollar Coins comes with a total of six options for collectors, the 2023 series is trimmed down significantly. The 100th-anniversary issues in 2021 included five Morgan Silver Dollars, with one mint mark or privy mark for each historic branch mint that issued the coins. This resulted in five different Morgan Silver Dollars.

For 2023, the US Mint offers only a single version of each coin. Both the 2023 Peace Silver Dollar and the 2023 Morgan Silver Dollar are produced by the Philadelphia Mint, with no mint mark present on the coins.

    About the Designs

The 2023 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars bear the famous designs that graced the two collective programs over the course of 38 years. George T. Morgan’s left-profile bust of Liberty from 1878 features on the obverse of the 2023 Morgan Dollar, while his original heraldic eagle design from the same year appears on the reverse of the modern bullion coin.

For the 2023 Peace Silver Dollar, Anthony di Francisci’s image of a gorgeous Lady Liberty is on the obverse. His depiction of the American bald eagle perched on a cliff edge, at peace, is found on the reverse. Di Francisci’s design reflected the popular attitude of the era that American coinage should be at the forefront in representing the nation’s desire for isolationism and peace following World War I.

    Packaging

The individual coins available for the 2023 Morgan Silver Dollar and 2023 Peace Silver Dollar come with US Mint presentation packaging. The coins are encapsulated within a US Mint display box and come with a Certificate of Authenticity from the mint.
