    Other Legal Tender

Other Legal Tender from JM Bullion

When it comes to investing in legal tender at JM Bullion, many investors and collectors might turn to the legal-tender silver and gold bullion coins we carry. However, while these products are incredibly popular with investors, there are more options out there beyond these series for collectors to consider. Chief among them are legal tender notes that combine modern paper currency with the finest designs from American history. To learn more about the Other Legal Tender options from JM Bullion, we encourage you to read on below.

    Legal Tender Notes

Throughout the history of paper currency production in the United States, various types of paper notes have printed by the United States Mint and the Treasury Department. From Silver Certificates and United States Notes to National Bank Notes, Federal Reserve Bank Notes and the modern Federal Reserve Notes, American paper money has evolved with time. In the case of collections like the Silver Certificate and the United States Note, some of America’s greatest paper money designs came from a bygone era. While JM Bullion does not offer rare, collector editions of these notes, we do carry modern collector versions of these designs embossed onto current Federal Reserve Notes. Below is a sampling of the designs you can find on modern legal tender notes at JM Bullion:

    • Black Eagle – Introduced on the 1899 $1 Silver Certificate, the Black Eagle effigy was unique in more ways than one. With an American bald eagle clutching the American flag in its talons, the design was the second-to-last image to feature on the Silver Certificate Series before it was discontinued after the release of a George Washington design. It is also the only design on paper money in US history to feature two Presidents of the United States on one side of a note or coin.
    • Running Antelope – Debuting in 1899 on the $5 Silver Certificate, the effigy of Running Antelope represented the first use of an indigenous figure’s effigy on American currency.
    • Bison Note – Ranked by many as the sixth-best US currency design of all-time, the 1901 $10 Bison Note was a release in the United States Note Series. It featured an image of an American bison alongside portraits of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.
    • Educational Series – The three-note series of Silver Certificates introduced in 1896 featured female allegories of History, Science, and Electricity on the face of different paper notes. These designs were only available from 1896 to 1899 and were used on the obverse of $1, $2, and $5 notes.

    Clad Coins

One of the best ways to collect some of America’s greatest coin designs without paying sky-high premiums is through the purchase of clad coins. A clad coin can come with any design, but what matters, in the end, is the metal that the coin is finished with. In most cases, JM Bullion carries clad coins that are finished with thin layers of 24-karat gold and/or ruthenium. As far as designs are concerned, you could find anything from obscure, historic US coin designs to exact replicas of modern US bullion coins.

    Other Coins

Another option for collectors seeking out America’s best coin designs are tribute coins, as one example. Tribute coins are similar to clad coins in the replication of historic coin designs and/or the use of clad layers to replicate the physical appearance of historic coins or modern bullion coins. However, tribute coins often feature designs that include all of the original inscriptions found on US coinage, even if the coins are NOT legal tender. You can spot the difference between a modern bullion coin and a tribute coin by the presence of a “COPY” inscription on one face of the coin. Additionally, like clad coins, tribute coins are finished with a thin layer of gold, silver, or another precious metal, rather than being produced with .999+ pure metal content.
