Gold and silver posted small gains on Christmas Eve amid a much quieter trading atmosphere. When all was said and done, gold gained 11 dollars while silver picked up almost ten cents.

On a day when most people were out of the office either traveling or taking their Christmas vacation a day early, precious metals did not move much at all. US economic data for the day included orders for durable goods, housing prices index in the US, and residential sales figures. Though there was quite a bit of data on the table today, none of it had any noticeable impact on precious metals.

In other news from around the world, Japan’s Nikkei Index hit a 6-year high on Tuesday as a result of recent stimulus measures employed by the Bank of Japan. On an annual basis, the Nikkei Index is up over 50%; a number that is great for investors but a bit peculiar at the same time. Though it is unlikely that Japanese stocks will be able to sustain such an impressive run, investors will look back on 2014 fondly.

The rest of this week is expected to be extremely quiet on the global trading front as most people will be away from their offices until at least Friday.New Years is being celebrated in the middle of next week and it can be expected that normal trading will not resume until the latter stages of next week. Though trading will still continue in some countries around the world, most major European and American markets will be closed for the day.
