Walking Liberty is one of America’s most iconic designs for circulation currency. It proved so popular during its era, and after, that it was revived in 1986 for use on the American Silver Eagle bullion and proof coins. Today, the United States Mint again recognizes this key design from history in the American Gold Centennial Series. The 2016 ½ oz American Gold Walking Liberty Half-Dollar Coin is available now as a perfect specimen from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Weinman’s now-iconic Walking Liberty design may have won a contest to replace the half-dollar design from then-Chief Engraver of the United States Mint Charles E. Barber, but it almost didn’t make it into circulation. The US Mint struggled to strike the Walking Liberty design consistently on coin blanks.
The trouble led the mint’s director to consider asking Barber to create his own new design for the half-dollar coin. Eventually the mint carried on with the production of the Walking Liberty Half dollar. Though it never struck well on the coins, it became immensely popular and remained in circulation through 1947.
Each 2016 ½ oz American Gold Walking Liberty Half-Dollar coin available to you here is a perfect specimen according to the PCGS. Coins with an SP70 grade exhibit full, original mint luster and lack all detracting flaws. The First Strike designation is reserved for coins that the PCGS receives for grading within the first 30 days of the release date issued by the US Mint.
On the obverse you’ll find the iconic Walking Liberty design, along with the additional engraving of Weinman’s “AW” initials. The reverse of the 2016 ½ oz American Gold Walking Liberty Half-Dollar coin features his original bald eagle design, accompanied by modern engravings of the coin’s metal content, purity, and weight.
