The Deep Cameo, or DCAM, designation that these coins have been given means that the devices of the coin are heavily frosted. The background has a deep mirror finish, providing a stark contrast between the two surfaces.
This unique proof strike is accomplished by using polished dies and striking them with extremely high levels of pressure. Using this process gives the coins sharper rims and designs, and it gives the coins exceptional contrast between the design sets and background fields.
The obverse face of these 2013-W 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coins features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ famous Gold Double Eagle design, which features Lady Liberty striding forward with the sun at her back. In one hand, Lady Liberty carries a lit torch. She grips an olive branch in the other hand. The famed image was created in 1907 for use on the Gold Double Eagle Coins of that time.
On the reverse, you will find sculptor Miley Busiek’s 1986 depiction of a family of bald eagles. The image shows a large male returning to his nest with an olive branch in his talons. In the nest, a female eagle rests with their hatchling. This design was created exclusively for American Gold Eagle Coins.
The United States Mint first released the American Gold Eagle Coins back in 1986. These coins are released in three versions each year: bullion, uncirculated, and proof. Today, you can also purchase silver, platinum, and palladium American Eagle Coins, each with different, but related, designs.
