The 2011 New Zealand Silver $2 Fiji Taku Coin is available. Each coin has been minted in 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver and has been assigned a $2 denomination by the New Zealand Mint.
There are few creatures in the world as majestic as the sea turtle. Their cousins that exist on land are not viewed with the same awe, largely due to their slow movement and lack of coloration. The Taku, better known internationally as the hawksbill turtle, is a beautifully colored creature that floats through the water with a grace and elegance that its land-based cousins simply cannot match. This native of the tropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans is featured on the 2011 1 oz New Zealand Silver Fiji Taku coin.
Coin Highlights:
- Contains 1 oz of .999 fine silver.
- Minted by the New Zealand Mint.
- Issued a face value of $2.
Hawksbill turtles are one of the world’s most amazing sea creatures, but also one of its most endangered. The hawksbill, referred to regionally as the Taku, faces elimination as a result of human activity throughout the region. Each year, the hawksbill turtles migrate from feeding grounds around the island nation of Fiji, to its breeding grounds along the tropical beaches of New Zealand.
On the obverse side of the 2011 1 oz New Zealand Silver Fiji Taku coin is the image of the hawksbill turtle. It is seen swimming amongst the bubbles in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Engraved along with the image of the turtle is the phrase “Fiji Taku,” and the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin.
On the reverse side, a right-profile image of Queen Elizabeth II is engraved in the middle. The Queen is shown with her crown atop her head, and the engravings “Elizabeth II,” “Fiji,” and “Two Dollars” stamped around her image. The year of minting is also included below the image of Queen Elizabeth II.
The New Zealand Mint is based in Auckland, New Zealand. It is the only privately owned mint in the country, as well as the only mint in the nation. The facility is responsible for minting commemorative and circulation coinage for several nations in the South Pacific, including the Cook Islands, Fiji, and Tuvalu.
