This 2009 Gold Double Eagle Coin has been carefully selected and certified by the NGC to be in perfect Mint State 70 condition. Additionally, each coin has been minted using a special Ultra High Relief finish. These special release coins were only issued by the US Mint in 2009 and are modeled after Augustus Saint-Gaudens' popular Double Eagle design, containing 1 troy ounce of 24k pure gold.
Coin Highlights:
Augustus Saint-Gaudens was one of the US Mint’s best engravers during the early 20th century and is responsible for designing many of the mint’s most popular coins. Among these coins were the $20 Gold Double Eagle which was struck between 1907 and 1933. Originally, the coins were minted with 90.0% pure gold, which was the standard of the time.
In 2009, the US Mint decided to release an all new, special commemorative $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Coin in .999 pure gold. Each coin was minted using special dies to give each one an ultra high relief. This means that the main design on the obverse and reverse of the coin is raised above the background, making it stand out.
On the obverse of the coin is Saint-Gaudens original image of a walking Lady Liberty. In her right hand she holds a torch while the left holds an olive branch. Above her head is the word “LIBERTY.” To the right of Lady Liberty is the year which is marked using roman numerals.
The reverse of the coin, and where it gets its name, is a large image of an eagle in mid-flight. Below the bird is an image of the sun surrounded by the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Branching out from the sun are several beams of sunlight. Above the eagle are the inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
