In 1986, the United States Mint introduced the Proof American Gold Eagle Coin for collectors. The series debuted with only a 1 oz gold coin that year, but would eventually grow to include all three fractional-ounce coins in the overall series. Right now, 1991-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coins are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1991-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin available here comes in a presentation box with a capsule and a Certificate of Authenticity. Please note, some of these coins may be missing the outer box or have minor blemishes on the packaging given the age of each product. Proof Gold Eagles have frosted design elements and mirrored background fields with a W mint mark from the West Point Mint.
In 1991, the Proof American Gold Eagle hit what was then a record low. Each of the date marks previously issued in the series had a significantly higher mintage. 1991 was also notable as the final release of American Gold Eagle coins with Roman numerals for the date marks. In 1992, the mint switched to the use of Arabic numerals.
Lady Liberty is on the obverse of all 1991-W Proof American Gold Eagle Coins. This depiction of Liberty is set in front-facing relief with Liberty holding a torch up in one hand and an olive branch in the other. A ring of stars encircles Liberty as rays of sunshine emanate from the background and the U.S. Capitol Building is featured at her feet.
In the reverse design of 1991 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle Coins, the mint features Miley Busiek’s image of a family of American bald eagles. In this design, a male eagle soars over a nest with a female eagle and hatchlings within the nest.
