The 1909 issue of $5 Indian Gold Half Eagles by the United States Mint stands out as the only date in the series to feature coins struck by all four active branch mints. This year was also the only one to feature coins in this denomination from the New Orleans Mint, with the southern branch mint issuing the coins just once in its final year of operation. The 1909-D Half Eagle’s mintage of more than 3.4 million coins was not only higher than all other 1909 issues by other branch mints, but was also the single-highest mintage by any branch mint in any year during the Indian Half Eagle Series.
On the obverse of 1909-D $5 Indian Half Eagles is a portrait of an indigenous figure. This figure is set in left-profile relief and wears a feathered headdress. This design, and its counterpart on the reverse, is struck incuse. The first-ever incuse strike from the US Mint, the designs are sunk into the surface of the coins.
The reverse side of 1909-D Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins comes with a depiction of the American bald eagle. The design captures the eagle in left-profile relief perched on a sheaf of arrows that is wrapped in an olive branch.
These 1909-D $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins are in Mint State 62 condition. The coins have dull mint luster with clusters of small contact marks and a few large marks or nicks. These particular coins have a lustrous, golden-apricot color and a sharp strike.
