The gold coins from the Fairmont Collection are a group of Pre-1933 US Gold Coins that were repatriated to the United States in the late 2010s and early 2020s. Most of these coins were first struck by the United States Mint more than a century ago and were used in international trade between the US and foreign countries. Each one is a unique specimen from a different era of American history. Right now, 1886-S $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.

The production of Liberty Gold Half Eagles covered nearly 70 years of American history from 1839 to 1908. Prior to the Civil War, Liberty Half Eagles were struck by Philadelphia, Dahlonega, Charlotte, New Orleans, and San Francisco branches of the US Mint. During the Civil War, production largely took place in Philadelphia and San Francisco.
After the US Civil War, Liberty Gold Half Eagles were largely struck by the Philadelphia and San Francisco branches. In fact, by the mid-1880s, the San Francisco Mint handled the bulk of production. For this particular year, 1886 Liberty Gold Half Eagles were struck at the San Francisco Mint at a rate 10 times higher than the Philadelphia Mint.
On the obverse of the 1886-S Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin, you will find the left-profile bust of Liberty. Created in 1838 by Christian Gobrecht, this design shows Liberty’s bust with a coronet crown on her head and 13 stars around the field.
The reverse side of 1886-S $5 Liberty Half Eagles comes with a depiction of the heraldic eagle. This design shows the bald eagle with the US national shield, the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace, and a banner above its head with the national motto.
