Before a crowd of nearly 70,000 fans, Secretariat won the 1973 Belmont Stakes by a record-smashing 31 lengths. Because he had already won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes earlier in the year, Secretariat was awarded the Triple Crown. At the time, this ended a 25-year Triple Crown drought in the Thoroughbred world. And since then, only 4 horses have achieved such a feat.
The obverse of Secretariat Triple Crown JFK Half Dollars features a colorized rendition of Secretariat and his jockey, Ron Turcotte. In the design, we see Turcotte and the horse facing right, with the crowd in the background. There are also inscriptions on the obverse reading Secretariat, Triple Crown, 50th Anniversary.

Featured on all standard Kennedy Half Dollar coins, this design is credited to Frank Gasparro, 10th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint.
