The smallest denomination in the Pre-33 US Eagle Series was the so-called Quarter Eagle, a gold coin with a $2.50 face value. First issued in 1796 by the United States Mint, the coins were issued from the dawn of the nation through the Roaring 20s. The longest-issued design, and most consistently struck image in the series, was the Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle. Today, Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle Coins are available online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Liberty Gold Quarter Eagles were put into production by the United States Mint in 1840 and were struck annually through 1907. Over the course of this long production period, the Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle was struck by the Philadelphia Mint, the now-defunct Charlotte, New Orleans, and Dahlonega Mints, and the San Francisco Mint. The Gold Quarter Eagle had several pauses in active production during its lifetime, but none of these periods came during the Liberty Head design program.
All of these Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle Coins are in Mint State 66 condition. Coins with this grade have above-average luster with no more than three or four minor contact marks. A few light hairlines are possible under magnification and there may also be one or two light scuff marks.
On the obverse of the $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle is Gobrecht’s depiction of Lady Liberty. This left-profile bust shows Liberty with a coronet crown on her head and a ring of 13 stars around her portrait. The date mark is included beneath the bust of Liberty.
The reverse side of Pre-33 Liberty Quarter Eagles comes with an image of the heraldic eagle. This design from Gobrecht shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. The nation of issue and face value are on this side.
