South Carolina, one of the 13 original colonies, was the first state to vote to secede from the Union; the first battle of the Civil War was also fought here. Historically, there have been a number of productive gold mines throughout the state.
Today, South Carolina is known for agriculture, including tobacco, dairy products, and poultry, as well as textile production.
South Carolina has a sales tax exemption for coins, currency, and bullion. Under Section 12-36-2120 (http://www.sctax.org/Tax+Information/Sales+and+Use+Tax/use_tax/UseTaxExemps.htm), “Gold, silver, or platinum bullion, or any combination of this bullion” are exempt from taxation. So, too, are “Coins that are or have been legal tender in the United States or other jurisdiction” and “currency.” This wide-ranging exemption means that most numismatic collectibles purchased from South Carolina coin shops are non-taxable.
Within South Carolina, purchases not meeting this exemption requirement are subject to a statewide sales tax of 6%. Counties may also impose an additional 1% local tax (http://www.sctax.org/Tax+Information/Sales+and+Use+Tax/default.htm).
