Lunar Series II coins from the Perth Mint build upon the success and demand of the original Lunar Series. Struck between 1996 and 2007, these coins had simpler designs and lower mintages than the modern Lunar Series II coins from Perth.
The 2016 ¼ oz Australian Gold Monkey coins are one of the six weights available for the Year of the Monkey, with the Perth Mint offering “mint-to-order” production levels on all fractional-weight coins and those above 1 oz in weight. Only the 1 oz coin will be restricted in production to roughly 30,000 coins.
On the reverse face of the 2016 ¼ oz Australian Gold Monkey is the latest image featured on a lunar coin. Designed by Ing Ing Jong, the image features a small monkey sitting on a tree branch. Resting on its hind legs, it is looking back over its shoulder at a peach hanging down from a branch above.
The obverse bears the common right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Though 2015 saw a new image of Her Majesty adopted on British coins, Sir Ian Rank-Broadley’s 1998 image remains on these coins as the Perth Mint preferred continuity with the other Lunar Series II coins.
Each 2016 ¼ oz Australian Gold Monkey in this product listing is available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Coins with a BU grade have no signs of wear and tear, though you may see breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks from the minting process.
