When it comes time to buy gold in the American Gold Eagle Series, most investors and collectors turn to the popular 1/10 oz coin. The 2003 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle coin was the only one of the four collectible options to see its overall sales total fall from 2002. While the other three coins gained mintage around 1,400 coins on average, the 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle dropped by a nominal amount of roughly 840 coins from the previous year.
For the 2003 Proof American Gold Eagle release, the United States Mint established a cap of 21,000 for its annual Proof American Gold Eagle 4-Coin Set. This figure is in addition to the individually available coins, which had a cap in the 1/10 oz weight of 25,000 coins. The 2003 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle did not come close to meeting its overall mintage cap between the two options, missing the mark by nearly 6,000.
On the obverse of Proof American Gold Eagle Coins is the image of Lady Liberty as she strides confidently forward from the national capital of Washington D.C. With the US Capitol Building visible at her feet, Liberty walks with the sun’s rays at her back holding a torch high in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.
The reverse side of the 2003 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin includes the design of a family of American bald eagles. This design was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek for exclusive use on the Gold Eagle Series.
These 2003 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagles earned PF70 certification from the NGC, denoting that each has full, original mint luster with no detracting flaws. The ultra-cameo designation is reserved for proof coins with strong, frosted designs which appear to hover over deeply-mirrored, clear background fields.
