Each 2024 2 oz New Zealand Silver $5 Niue Hawksbill Turtle Coin is available to you here with a protective plastic flip. This coin series has featured the same core design on the reverse since its 2010 debut, with King Charles III now gracing the obverse for the first time in the program’s history.
The design of the New Hawksbill has changed several times in its history, though some of those changes were minor in nature. The reverse, for example, has long featured the hawksbill turtle at the center. While the modern Niue Hawksbill features the word TURTLE on this side, when the series was known as the Fiji Taku from 2010-2013, the word TAKU was on the reverse.
As far as the obverse, three different designs have now featured on the reverse. From 2010-2012, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was on the obverse of the Fiji Taku. In the Fiji Taku’s final release in 2013, the Fijian coat of arms was used. Her Majesty’s effigy returned to the obverse from 2014-2023 following the coin’s rebranding as the Niue Hawksbill. Now, Charles III makes his debut.
King Charles III features on the obverse of 2024 Silver Niue Hawksbill Turtle Coins. This first-generation effigy from the New Zealand Mint is a left-profile relief from Jody Clark that depicts King without a crown.
The hawksbill turtle is on the reverse of 2024 2 oz Silver $5 Hawksbill Turtle Coins. Hawksbill turtles are easily distinguishable by their unique, overlapping scutes (scales) on their carapace (shell), which gives it a serrated or “saw-like” appearance. They have a generally flattened body, a pointed head, and a beak-like mouth, which is adapted for feeding on sponges.

“I've purchased several of these with the Queen, which are as beautiful as these with the king. My grand-kids just called and are loving the incredible design and beauty. Thanks JM Bullion for the chance to own a piece of history. Great S&H.”
