The introduction of the Silver Krugerrand was part of the 50^th anniversary of the series and the coin proved so popular that the Rand Refinery and South African Mint continue to issue it annually. The coins have the same designs as the Gold Krugerrand, but unlike the Gold Krugerrand, the Silver Krugerrand has an assigned face value of 1 Rand. Both coins are legal tender, but only the silver coins have an assigned face value.
