2024 marks the official 20th anniversary of the coins in this series as the Somalia Gold Elephant. Counting the individual issues since the transition to Somalia, this is the 21st date mark since 2004. Prior to 2004, the series was available for five years as the Zambia Elephant. Both versions of the coin were produced by the Bavarian State Mint and feature new reverse designs, the nation of issue was the only change between 2003 and 2004.
African bush elephants have long been the focal point of the reverse design in this series. The African bush elephant, or Loxodonta Africana, is the largest land mammal on Earth. Adult males can reach an impressive height of up to 13 feet at the shoulder and weigh between 11,000 and 30,000 pounds.
The obverse side of the 2024 1 oz Gold Elephant Coin comes with a depiction of the national coat of arms. The Somali coat of arms includes a crowned shield with a simple depiction of horizontal lines in the background and a single star at the center. The shield itself is supported on either side by a leopard.
On the reverse of each 2024 Somalia Gold Elephant, you will find the new 2024 depiction of the bush elephant. This year’s design features two male elephants engaged in battle, with the male to the right charging toward the other elephant as it flaps out its ears and raises its trunk and tusks.
