Henry VII’s claim to the English throne was based on his victory at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, where he defeated Richard III. Henry’s mother, Margaret Beaufort, had Welsh ancestry, and his father, Edmund Tudor, was a direct descendant of the Welsh royal house of Tudor. The red dragon, a symbol of Wales, was incorporated into the Tudor family crest as a nod to their Welsh heritage.
