Cristo Redentor, or Christ the Redeemer, is an iconic statue located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The idea for a large religious monument on Mount Corcovado was proposed by a Catholic priest named Pedro Maria Boss in the 1850s. However, the actual concept of Cristo Redentor as it stands today was developed much later in the 1920s.
In the obverse field of the 2024 Proof Solomon Islands Gold World Landmarks Christ the Redeemer Coins, His Majesty King Charles III is featured. Charles III is captured in left-profile relief in all his coin portraits. This follows English tradition in flipping the orientation of a portrait from one monarch to the next, as his predecessor, Queen Elizabeth II, was always depicted in right-profile relief.
For the reverse design of 2024 1/200 oz Proof Gold World Landmarks Christ the Redeemer Coins, the mint features the religious statue in the design. The statue was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted by French artist Paul Landowski. The face was created by Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida. The design reflects the Art Deco style popular in the 1920s and 1930s.
