Over the last four decades, Canadian Gold Maple Leafs have featured four different effigies of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The first two portraits used in the series came from the designs created for the Royal Mint. Starting in 1990, the Royal Canadian Mint commissioned its own portraits of Her Late Majesty, with the designs coming from Canadian artists. This tradition continues with King Charles III’s debut on the coins in 2024.
On the obverse of 2024 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins, you will find the first-ever portrait of King Charles III in this series. His Majesty is shown here in just the third monarch portrait from a Canadian artist. Charles III features in left-profile relief, following the tradition of the monarch’s orientation changing with the start of a new reign.
The reverse side of 2024 1/10 oz Gold Maple Leafs features the same design that has graced the coins since 1979. Here, the sugar maple leaf is shown in a natural design created by Walter Ott. This image of the sugar maple leaf has been on all versions of the coin since 1979.
