The mine employs both open-pit and underground mining methods to extract gold from the rich ore deposits beneath the Earth's surface. Open-pit mining involves removing large quantities of overburden (waste rock and soil) to access the gold-bearing ore. This process requires massive earth-moving equipment, including haul trucks and excavators.
The Super Pit has also become a popular tourist attraction in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Visitors can take guided tours to witness the mining operations up close and learn about the history and significance of the mine in a region that is often referred to as the golden mile. This design shows the stepped terraces within the pit and the roads that the massive haulers use to bring dirt and soil up to the surface after mining. This side includes an authentication feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter.
