The history of the Royal Arms dates back to the rule of King Richard I at the end of the 12^th century. This famous warrior king of the British spent most of his decade-long reign engaged in battles outside of the kingdom. This included the defense of his family lands in France and in the Holy Land during the Third Crusade.

Richard I marched his forces into battle with an insignia bearing three lions in passant guardant pose. This emblem was adopted in 1198 as the first Royal Arms of England. Though the modern Royal Arms includes various symbols, the Three Lions remains at the heart as the coat of arms of England.
