Historical accounts of the Erie people in Ohio date back to 1624. According to documents, the Huron spoke with the French lay brother Gabriel Sagard about a group known as Erielhonan on the other side of the lake. According to the dictionary of Sagard, the word Erielhonan was interpreted to mean Cat People. Historians suspect this may be because of the raccoon tails the Erie people frequently wore with their clothing.
