The Erie people once occupied the southern shores of Lake Erie along with regions of Pennsylvania and New York. The tribe was ultimately vanquished in the Beaver Wars, in which the Iroquois attempted to gain total control of the fur trade with Europe. It is believed that the surviving members of the Erie people were incorporated into the Iroquois tribe following the conflict.
The obverse of 2023 1 oz Native America the Beautiful Ohio Silver Coins features an Erie tribesperson. The Native American reference in this release is Erielhonan, an Iroquoian word meaning “long tail.” This original name for the Erie people possibly stemmed from the fact they often incorporated raccoon tails into their costumes.
On the reverse of 2023 1 oz Colorized Native America the Beautiful Silver Coins, you will find the official series logo. In the center, there is a bald eagle in left-profile relief. Surrounding the eagle is a traditional Native American star pattern with arrowheads inserted between each point. The reverse also includes inscriptions of the coin’s identifying hallmarks.
