Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse of these 2022 2 oz Czech Lion Silver Coins. The portrait was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint in 1998. The effigy is enclosed by the outline of a shield. The rest of the design is occupied by an eagle with elements of the St. Wenceslas, Moravian, and Silesian heraldic designs.
A mighty lion is featured on the obverse of the 2022 Niue Czech Lion Silver Coin. The lion is a symbol of power and sovereignty for the people of the Czech Republic. As is common, this regal creature is shown wearing the Crown of Saint Wenceslas, which was originally used in the 1346 coronation of Charles IV. Additional design elements include Linden branch leaves and the words Ceska Republika inscribed towards the lower portion.
2022 marks the 6th release in the Czech Lion series. If you trace the series back to its start in 2017, you will notice how the design of the coins has evolved. The first four releases depicted variations on a full body of a lion guarding the Crown of Saint Wenceslas. Since 2021, the design has been altered to feature the lion in a detailed close-up and wearing the crown instead of guarding it. This suggests that for the people of the Czech Republic, the lion is not simply a symbolic protector, but a representation of power and authority, as well.
