Stories from the Dreamtime — the complex mythical worldview and religious heritage of Australia’s aboriginal peoples — have brought major contributions to the global cultural heritage of humankind, a rich store of tales that illustrate a profoundly ancient relationship with the land and its rhythms and a deep heritage of ethical wisdom about human relationships with the environment and with one another. One such story, the myth of the black swan of “maali” from the Nyoongar people of southwestern Australia, provides the subject matter for a new, dramatically colorized and artistically-distinctive precious silver collectible from the Perth Mint. The 2022 2 oz Antique Colorized Maali Silver Black Swan Coin is now available from JM Bullion.

The story of the black swan, or “maali,” is in part about the cultural hero Wurrunna, who plays a part in numerous Nyoongar stories. In the black swan story, Wurrunna transforms two brothers into white swans so that they can help their people during a raid. Unfortunately for the brothers, during their mission, they are set upon by angry eagle hawks, jealous of the arrogant swans’ white plumage, who tear the feathers from their bodies. Compassionate crows come to their aid, donating their own black feathers, and ever after the black swan has had a red beak from the bloodshed in the ambush.
This Dreamtime legend is celebrated by the 2022 Antique Colorized Maali Silver Black Swan Coin from the Perth Mint. Shipping in a display case inside colorful box packaging, each item comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and is fully insured against loss or damage by JM Bullion.
The coin’s obverse side features an effigy of the late British monarch Elizabeth II, confirming it as legal tender. It carries the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “AUSTRALIA,” “2 oz 9999 Ag,” “2022,” and “2 DOLLARS.”
Its reverse side features a stunning colorized design by Kevin Bynder, a Whadjuk-Yuet-Ballardong artist and teacher from Nyoongar country, featuring an Aboriginal-styled silver swan against a multicolored backdrop.
