In 1895 George William De Saulles designed the original British Trade Dollar. This coin, inspired by the Spanish dollar, was created to facilitate trade between Britain and Hong Kong, as well as the Straits Settlements. However, upon the advent of the Straits Dollar, the Trade Dollars were used exclusively for Hong Kong trade up until 1935. Today, the original coins are hard to come by, in part because of China’s ban on silver ownership in 1934. As a result, many of the coins were melted down for other uses.
Each 2022 1 oz British Trade Dollar Coin has been produced by the East India Company under the jurisdiction of St. Helena. These coins, which reimagine the original British Trade Dollar, will arrive to you in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. This term describes coins that will have only minor flaws. Each coin arrives to you protected inside a plastic flip.
On the obverse of 2022 British Trade Dollar Silver Coins is a bust of Queen Elizabeth II. This popular portrait was designed by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint in 2015. In most regions, it is considered the fifth official portrait of Her Majesty used for coinage. Inscriptions read Queen Elizabeth II, St. Helena, One Pound, 2022.
The reverse field of the 2022 1 oz Trade Dollar Silver Coin features Britannia, the personification of Britain. This female figure is shown in close-up wearing a helmet with the British flag printed across it. In the background, we see a trident and a globe pattern with the map of the United Kingdom. Inscriptions include Trade Dollar and EIC, which stands for East India Company.
