J.R.R. Tolkien had the idea for Mount Doom when he saw Stromboli Island off the coast of Sicily. One of the most active volcanoes in the world, its regular eruptions gave him the idea for a peak whose constant outpouring of smoke and fire would blast the land around it and form the engine for the evil powers of Dark Lord Sauron. In his classic film adaptations of the trilogy, Peter Jackson had to return to the real world to “cast” Mount Doom, choosing the threatening and oppressive atmosphere of Mount Ngauruhoe, whose image is now a generation’s point of reference for the fictional place.
The 2022 Niue Gold Lord of the Rings Mount Doom Coin features detailed engravings with touches of added relief. Each coin ships in an official display case that contains a Certificate of Authenticity to verify its unique number in an extremely limited mintage.
The coin’s obverse side features the late Queen Elizabeth II in an official effigy that confirms it as legal tender. It also bears the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE,” “25 DOLLARS” and “2022.”
The reverse side features a high-relief rendition of the film version of Mount Doom, with inscriptions of the copyright and trademark of New Line Productions at the rim. These are accompanied by verifications of the coin’s weight and gold content.
