The Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah is a small band of Southern Paiute people who reside in southwestern Utah today. Historically, the tribes in the Southern Paiute band lived throughout the Colorado River basin in the south of Nevada, north of Arizona, and the southern portions of Utah.
Paiute people were not encountered by outsiders until 1776 when Spanish missionaries were traveling over land from Mexico and present-day Texas to the Catholic missions of California. Throughout the course of their history, the Paiute people suffered greatly at the hands of their neighboring tribes, like the Navajo and Ute, who conducted slave raids on the Paiute and sold off their captives.
